The Mini Dachshunds are low-set petit dogs weighing roughly between 4-6kgs. They have a cheeky, energetic and independent nature and make very loving and loyal companions. Due to the shape of it's body Dachshund owners are encouraged to be mindful of activities that can strain the Dachshund's lower back/hips, such as jumping down from furniture.
The Dachshund is an intelligent breed with a good amount of independance and a cheeky, playful nature. They can be quite mischevious as pups, as their hunting instincts can encourage them to explore, dig and sniff things out. It's best to encourage positive outlets of this behaviour and energy through training, games and regular exercise and playtime.
Dachshunds can come with short-haired coat, wired-haired coat or a long-haired coat. The longer coat requires regular brushing and the occasional groom (if desired) to maintain. The short-haired and wired-haired coat is much easier to maintain with brushing only required to remove excess hair from the coat. Dachshunds are considered moderate shedders.
The Dachshund breed originated in Germany as a hunting dog. "Dachshund" translates to "Badger dogs" which is precisely what they hunted.
